Data Realities: The Cost of “Just One More Metric”


Introduction:

Adding a new metric often feels harmless.

A product team wants one more dashboard. A stakeholder asks for an extra dimension. An analyst requests additional tracking for better visibility. Each request sounds reasonable in isolation.

But over time, these small additions accumulate.

What begins as “just one more metric” turns into increased pipeline complexity, higher storage costs, slower queries, and harder-to-maintain data models. The cost is rarely immediate, but it compounds steadily.


Metrics Multiply Faster Than Expected:

Metrics rarely exist alone.

Adding one metric often introduces:

  • new dimensions
  • additional aggregations
  • more joins
  • extra transformations

A simple request can expand into multiple downstream dependencies. As the data model grows, complexity increases faster than the original request suggests.


Pipeline Complexity Increases Quietly:

Each new metric adds logic to the pipeline.

Transformations become harder to understand. Debugging takes longer. Changes in upstream data can impact multiple downstream metrics in unexpected ways.

Over time, pipelines become fragile — not because of scale alone, but because of accumulated complexity.


Storage and Compute Costs Add Up:

Metrics are not free.

Every additional field, aggregation, and table contributes to:

  • compute costs during transformation
  • query execution time

In large-scale systems, even small inefficiencies become expensive when multiplied across millions of rows and frequent queries.

Different teams may define similar metrics slightly differently. Naming conventions drift. Logic diverges across pipelines.

Who defines the metric? Who validates it? Who maintains it when upstream data changes?

Without clear ownership, metrics degrade over time — becoming outdated, incorrect, or unused.

Many metrics are created without a clear purpose.

If a metric does not influence a decision, it adds noise rather than value. Collecting data without intent increases system load without improving outcomes.

Before adding a metric, the question should be: What decision will this enable?


Simplification Is a Continuous Effort:

Data systems require regular pruning.

Unused metrics should be removed. Redundant logic should be consolidated. Definitions should be standardised.

Without active simplification, data systems naturally become more complex over time.


Conclusion:
